Decom North Sea Conference - St Andrews

The 3rd annual Offshore Decommissioning Conference was held at the Fairmont Hotel in St Andrews, Scotland, on 9–11 October 2012. The sell-out event organised by Decom North Sea in partnership with Oil and Gas UK hosted over 300 delegates from 20 operators as well as service companies and other industry-related businesses.

With a mixture of workshops, presentations and question-and-answer sessions, the conference covered a wide range of topics on all aspects of decommissioning. Keynote speaker Gerry Borghesi (UK/Netherlands production manager for ExxonMobil) opened the conference with a thought-provoking address outlining the key issues that need to be considered to be ready to meet the decommissioning challenge.

InterAct’s Phil Chandler, a senior petroleum engineer, was invited to speak on “Technical and Operational Issues of Well P&A”, a topic that has increased in pertinence in recent years as the size of the market and challenges ahead are realised. “It is great seeing a focus being put on well abandonment, and I was pleased to be able to present some of the issues operators have highlighted within this area of the industry,” said Phil.

As a director of Decom North Sea, InterAct’s general manager, Stuart Wordsworth, was involved in organising the conference. Stuart said, “The success of the conference is testament to the growing importance and relevance of the decommissioning market. With InterAct’s unrivalled experience of well plugging and abandonment, the conference is an ideal place to network and show the industry what we can do.”

InterAct’s parent company, Acteon, sponsored the main dinner where delegates enjoyed an after-dinner speech from Dr Ed Coates, who raced to the South Pole alongside TV personality Ben Fogle and former Olympic rower James Cracknell. Acteon vice president Neill Kelly addressed the delegates in a pre-dinner speech.
